Graduate Council Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, October 22, 2003
207 McDonough at 12 noon

In attendance: Dave McShaffrey (Chair/recorder), Laura Little, Cathy Brown,  Jim O’Donnell, Dan Huck; visitor Provost Sue DeWine.

Items:

The minutes from October 8, 2003 were approved.

McShaffrey reported on the 10/15/2003 Faculty Council meeting where Faculty Council apparently agreed to a proposal for Graduate Council to take over the role of approving courses for graduate credit (in place of sending them on to Curriculum Committee).  Graduate Council will also take responsibility for approving graduate programs and sending them on to the full faculty for final approval. This will entail updating the appropriate sections in the Faculty Constitution and the Policies and Practices.  McShaffrey had promised to provide Faculty Council with updated versions of those documents early next semester.  In the interim, he will work out procedures with Bev Hogue, chair of Curriculum Committee.

Cathy Brown handed out sheets given to new graduate students for the purpose of orientation.  Further work on a graduate student orientation program was deferred to a later date.

Provost DeWine presented Graduate Council with the administration’s plan to create an account to pay for graduate student activities (such as academic travel, guest speakers, etc.).  This is necessary because at present graduate students are not eligible for funding by Student Senate or other organizations on campus.  The Provost asked the graduate council to administer the funds and to consider adding student representation to the council for this purpose.  There will be about $5,000 allocated this year for such purposes.

It was agreed that the directors of each of the programs would take responsibility for updating their section of the Graduate Catalog.  Huck volunteered to review the Academic Policies and Practices section, and either Douglass or Little will review the Financial Aid/Standards of Academic Progress section.  All members will look for areas that need to be updated or added to the catalog.

The meeting degenerated into a mad rush for 1pm classes at about 12:53.
