Graduate Council Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, March 31, 2004
207 McDonough at 12 noon
In attendance: Dave McShaffrey (Chair), Bill Bauer, Laura Little, Cathy
Brown, Sharon Douglass, Gloria Stewart, Dan Huck, Janet Becker, Corina
Gerczak, Tom Perry, Carolyn Backus, Tina Ullman; visitors: Thomas Simmers,
Dottie Erb.
Meeting minutes from March 17, 2004, were approved.
Items:
Fees for part time graduate students: Bauer and Erb expressed concern
regarding the cost of activity fees for part time MAEd students. Bauer
presented the rates of tuition at other Ohio colleges/universities (public
and private) in comparison to MC. Erb stated that some students have
decided to go to other institutions instead of MC because of the cost
differences. The fees for next academic year had been set by
administration; Provost Sue DeWine asked Erb to bring the matter before
Graduate Council again. A lengthy discussion ensued with the passage of
Stewart’s motion that Council prepare a recommendation for the
administration to review fee assessments for all part time graduate
students. Bauer volunteered to attend the president’s cabinet meeting as
Council representative when the recommendation is presented.
Minimum course grades and Policies & Practices: The minimum course grade
requirements were included in last meeting’s minutes which were approved
at the start of today’s meeting. McShaffrey revised Council’s Policies &
Practices to reflect the constitutional changes made including the program
directors voting rotation. (Revision was sent to members via email earlier
this week.) Any further revisions will be sent via email before our next
meeting before being forwarded to Faculty Council.
Council memo of support for graduate programs: Members discussed revisions
to the memo prepared by McShaffrey regarding additional support needed for
graduate programs. McShaffrey will revise the memo further and send to
members via email before our next meeting.
EDUC620 & EDUC651: Bauer stated that EDUC620, Ethics for Teachers and
Counselors, currently required by the college for the MAEd is not required
by NCATE, the accrediting agency. EDUC651, Tests and Measurements, is not
a required course either in the program or by NCATE, but would be helpful
to the students. Bauer’s motion to change EDUC620 to an elective and make
EDUC651 a required course passed. It will be made effective for Fall 2004.
Next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 7, 2004, 12 noon, 207
McDonough. Meeting adjourned at 1:04 pm.
