Graduate Council Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, January 21, 2004
207 McDonough at 12 noon
In attendance: Dave McShaffrey (Chair), Laura Little, Jim O’Donnell,
Bill Bauer, Mark Sibicky, Tina Ullman, Cathy Brown, Sharon Douglass.
Meeting minutes from December 3, 2003, were approved as amended.
Items:
Graduate catalog: McShaffrey reminded members to review the catalog for
areas previously assigned and to send editorial changes and corrections
directly to Prof. Fraser MacHaffie. The Records Office should be contacted
if there are changes to course numbers as part of an effort to improve
Council’s communications with that office. Bauer and Brown suggested
including the information about enhanced courses in the Academic Policies
& Practices section.
Degree audit sheets & substitution of elective classes across departments:
Sibicky requested having this issue on the agenda for a future meeting.
Sibicky stated the issue came up in his department due to his impending
sabbatical which may cause a lack of enough faculty to teach electives in
the PSYC graduate program.
Constitution sections for Graduate Council: Members discussed the changes
to forward to Faculty Council including composition of Council, student
representatives, and voting rights. McShaffrey relayed the concerns of
Faculty Council and Curriculum Committee about the size of council and
possible voting blocks of program directors. McShaffrey will submit latest
revisions to Prof. Ed Osborne for discussion at Faculty Council’s meeting
today. McShaffrey anticipates these changes will be on the agenda for the
February 9, 2004, faculty meeting.
Education proposal preparation: Bauer gave members 3 handouts as an
overview of the certification program: summaries of new EDUC classes for
the proposed Mild/Moderate Certification Intervention Specialist
Certification, the program’s degree plan, and the State Superintendents
Task Force for Preparing Special Education Personnel report. Bauer stated
the report being submitted to NCATE for approval is lengthy so copies are
not being made for each Council member but he will have a copy available
for anyone that wants to review it.
Meeting time for spring semester: There was a general consensus to keep
the same meeting time this semester. McShaffrey will contact the members
not present to find out if any conflicts with this time are ongoing.
Next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, February 4, 2004, 12 noon, 207
McDonough.
Meeting adjourned at 12:58 pm.
