Faculty Council Meeting
February 3, 2005

Present: Catalano (recorder-in-turn), DeWine, Diller (guest; college webmaster), Erb, Little (guest; college instructional technologist), McDaniel, Scott, Tager, R. Walker (chair), Young

1    Faculty Council meeting began at 12:35; Minutes from January 27 were approved as amended.

 2.    Diller and Little answered questions that Faculty Council had regarding the online version of the Faculty Manual.  Can specific individual pages be identified and printed?   Can links be inserted within the online version of the manual to reference different committee pages?  Could forms also be made available online so that they are easily downloaded and filled out?  Could links and anchor tags be inserted into the document?

Diller and Little claimed that we should have two files.  One would be html (for online viewing).  We could also provide a PDF that we can download and print.

Young wondered who would be responsible for maintaining this particular site.  John Michel (retired) originally placed the material online.  Greg Delemeester has agreed to take on the position of maintaining this site.

3    Council then discussed the upcoming trustee meetings, and individual committee members were assigned to attend various board committee meetings.

4.    Council then moved back to the motion to couple tenure and promotion from assistant to associate professor.  Discussion ensued, and revisions to the sections VI.C.2.e (Duties of the Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion Committee) and VI.D.3 (Criteria for Promotion to Associate Professor) were made in preparation to present to the full faculty at the February 14th faculty meeting as a substitute motion.  VI.C.2.e and VI.D.3 will now have the following phrase inserted: “Assistant professors, who are at least in their fifth year in rank and who meet the criteria for tenure recommendation, are promoted to the rank of associate professor at the time of the tenure award.”

It was brought up that Faculty Council once interpreted the promotion criteria to mean that faculty could not be promoted until after their fifth full year in rank (rather than being promoted during the fifth year).  Council acknowledges that the current motion will be a new interpretation of the promotion criteria.

 5.    Council then set the agenda for the February 14th Faculty Meeting.  The motion to couple tenure and promotion from assistant to associate professor will be discussed.  D. Erb’s substitute motion will be put to a vote.  Mary Bea Eaton will also discuss the services associated with the Disabilities Office.  There will also be a Provost’s and President’s report.

6.    Council adjourned at 2:00
